Analysis of the short film,
“The Awareness”. I found this video on the website shortoftheweek.com, and
enjoyed the visuals and concept of the film. The film’s basic synopsis is of a
janitor in an old factory building who stumbles upon the first “self-aware”
computer machine.
The lighting and editing in
this film also stands out well. The lighting in this film is literally low key
for its entirety, which I think the director used to encode a mood of
destruction and almost a world-ending feel, especially due to the dim orange
lights through the window, which significantly is also the colour of the
glowing, eerie monitors. The use of the
fiery orange also
The mise-en-scene of the film
is done quite particularly. All the elements from the location of the dark
warehouse to the poorly lazily dressed workers really connote a feel of loss,
darkness and even failure; it seems like the janitor has given up on life, and
this is reflected well by the setting – a rundown, dark, forgotten workplace.
The characters are also quite
developed throughout the film, and the way they are filmed really help the
viewer understand their character. The man sat at the desk has a very
authoritative tone, and this is shown in the camera angles and how the lighting
mysteriously darkens much of his face. His stance also gives the impression he
is better than the janitor, but is also quite a mysterious, wise character.
